Lonely World

The project explores the emotional state of loneliness. Affecting millions of people and exacerbated by a global pandemic, loneliness is a key driver of poor mental health and a contributing factor of distress. Through a series of 15 images, the project aims to capture and convey the emotion of loneliness and similar emotions that arise from related concepts such as being alone, solitude, physical, social and emotional isolation, in an effort to address the issue. Using the power of photography to raise awareness, the Lonely World project intents to make the viewers feel and think about the widespread issue of loneliness and how important our connections to other people and our communities are to protect our mental health. The idea for the project emerged from the significant impact of loneliness on mental health and it is inspired by a number of existing photography projects which address similar issues in the context of mental health. To capture the emotional state of loneliness, the image collection combines portrait and still life photography genres, with storytelling elements and visual metaphors in black and white.
